Welcome to the 2025 Q4 issue of The Square
Welcome, Brethren, to the October 2025 issue of The Square Magazine, your quarterly window into the vibrant and ever-evolving world of Freemasonry.
Digital Freemasonry: Between Innovation and Identity
The landscape of Freemasonry is poised to enter what some are already calling its “second digital phase.” Two significant initiatives are leading the way. Exlibris Lodge/Academy (exlibac.com) will convene its second digital conference on 4 October 2025 in London, while Digital Freemasonry, spearheaded by the Grand Lodge Libertas 5775 in Croatia (digitalfreemasonry.com), will hold its own conference on 18 October 2025 in Belgrade.
Though distinct in origin, both projects are converging on a bold objective: the creation of a virtual reality lodge room. Such a development, if realised, would represent not a minor innovation but a fundamental reimagining of what constitutes a Masonic meeting.
The removal of geography as a prerequisite for participation—achieved through virtual reality environments authenticated by blockchain—would overturn centuries of practice wherein brethren gathered bodily in a single, physical space.
This shift prompts searching questions. To what extent can ritual, whose efficacy is bound up with presence, atmosphere, and the shared experience of physical space, survive transplantation into the digital domain?
Can the essence of initiation—long conceived as a transformative encounter enacted through drama, symbol, and embodied presence—be authentically mediated through avatars and headsets? For some brethren, the answer is a clear and emphatic “no.” They fear that digital Masonry risks reducing mystery to simulation, presence to proxy, and fraternity to a network connection.
Yet the pressures driving such innovation cannot be dismissed. Grand Lodges across the globe face a continuing decline in membership, despite tireless campaigns to attract new initiates. Rising costs—lodge dues, dining expenses, travel, and social obligations—only exacerbate the situation, placing ever greater demands on brethren already constrained by modern professional and family commitments.
For those unable to attend meetings regularly, digital Freemasonry holds the promise of inclusion rather than exclusion, offering an alternative pathway to participation.
Thus, the Craft stands at a crossroads. Digital Freemasonry may be a lifeline to some and an existential threat to others. It may reinvigorate the fraternity by embracing the tools of the 21st century—or it may, inadvertently, erode the very foundations upon which Freemasonry’s identity rests.
The Square Magazine will report on both the London and Belgrade conferences, observing not only the technological achievements unveiled but also the philosophical debates they provoke. For in the end, the question is not simply can we meet in virtual reality, but rather what does it mean for the Craft if we do.

Effective Communication Strategies
What if the greatest working tool for Masonic Education was your own voice? This exploration of Masonic moral philosophy reveals how modern communication strategies unlock the symbolism in Freemasonry. Learn how to turn every conversation into a practical application of the Craft’s timeless virtues and truly master your Masonic ritual.

Freemasonry in the Digital Mirror
Narrative Analysis, Disinformation and Self-Understanding (2024-2025)
In the digital age, Freemasonry confronts a paradox: 97% of online discourse centers on its institutional and historical narratives, yet just 3% of antagonistic content—driven by religious and conspiratorial actors—dominates visibility via algorithmic amplification. Analyzing 7,339 multilingual posts (2024–2025), this study reveals how discretion, once a shield, now leaves a narrative vacuum. The Order faces a crossroads: embrace strategic transparency to shape its digital identity or let external actors define it.

Pedagogy of Freemasonry
Historically celebrated as a harmonious blending of cultures, the concept of mestizaje often conceals a violent legacy of erasure. This work argues that the traditional narrative of mixing has served as a colonial tool, silencing Indigenous and Black identities to forge a homogenized national myth. A decolonized future requires confronting this past and embracing a pluriversal, not assimilated, understanding of heritage.

Mr. Pablo
Pablo Fanque, born William Darby, rose from poverty to become Britain’s first Black circus proprietor. More than an entertainer, he embodied fraternity through his charitable benefits for widows, performers, and communities. Though not a Freemason, his ties to friendly societies like the Ancient Shepherds reveal a life lived by principles of loyalty, mutual aid, and brotherly compassion.

Triadic Symbolism in Freemasonry
Freemasonry’s triadic symbolism is not a mere ornament but a metaphysical principle woven through ritual, doctrine, and philosophy. From the degrees of initiation to the Great Lights, alchemical triads, and Kabbalistic pillars, the number three reveals the Craft’s architecture of balance and transformation — mapping the Mason’s ascent from ignorance through knowledge toward wisdom and spiritual unity.

Four Industrial Revolutions: Four Stages of English Freemasonry
Each Industrial Revolution has acted as a catalyst for cultural transformation, and English Freemasonry has evolved in parallel—from Enlightenment introduction to post-truth adaptation. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, conjoining biological, cultural, and digital domains, now challenges the very foundations of human agency. Within this milieu, Freemasonry may serve as a counter-model, sustaining corrigible participation through ritualised civic practice.

Truth – the application of Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice
Unearthed from a forgotten archive, this manuscript has stunned historians with its revelations. The dense, elegant prose details a secret history previously lost to time—a hidden narrative of power, betrayal, and intrigue operating within the shogun’s court. It challenges everything we thought we knew, promising to rewrite the chronicles of an entire era for a new generation.

Building the Inner Temple
Freemasonry’s greatest secret is this: the temple we are charged to build is not of stone and gold, but within the chambers of the human heart. We enter as rough ashlars, and our true labor lies in applying the working tools not to granite, but to the stubborn stone of our own ego. The gavel must chip away our pride; the square must align our actions with our conscience. We are called to descend into our own inner earth, to confront our shadows and rectify what is misaligned, so that from the raw material of our lives, we may raise a living sanctuary—an Inner Temple worthy of the Great Architect’s indwelling Light.

The Imprint of Hebrew on the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite
Hebrew has shaped the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite (AASR) for centuries, yet its depth is often obscured by mistranslations and misinterpretations. This article traces Hebrew’s journey from ancient roots to modern revival, showing why accuracy matters. By restoring linguistic precision, it seeks to unlock the Rite’s symbolic power, philosophical meaning, and timeless moral insights.

Transformational Leadership in Contemporary Freemasonry
Freemasonry is not merely ritual—it is leadership by light. Drawing from the archetype of the Worshipful Master and the living example of Shriners El Salvador, this study reveals how transformational leadership—through example, inspiration, critical thought, and compassionate service—remains vital today. In symbols, silence, and action, Masonry cultivates leaders who transform communities while perfecting themselves.

Exile and Deportation as Archetype: A Masonic Meditation
Exile is never mere loss. From Roman deportatio to biblical banishment, from Jung’s shadow to the drama of Hiram Abiff, deportation emerges as a universal archetype: removal, ordeal, and restoration. Freemasonry preserves this truth in ritual, teaching that every exile conceals the promise of return — and every darkness the certainty of Light.

Augmented Reality (AR) app for a Masonic Museum Exhibit
Augmented Reality (AR) is transforming how museums engage, educate, and inspire. From interactive exhibits that bring history to life, to new revenue streams, accessibility advances, and global reach, AR delivers strategic value far beyond novelty. Discover how this innovative technology positions museums as leaders in cultural innovation and visitor experience.

Why Join the Royal Arch
For the Master Mason, the journey is intentionally incomplete—a tragic cliff-hanger leaving a symbolic void. The Royal Arch provides the essential second half, offering narrative resolution and recovering the genuine lost Word. It is the keystone that completes the allegorical arch, transforming a moral builder into a true spiritual Master and fulfilling the promise of further light.

Synthetic Intelligence and the Egregore of the Craft
Synthetic intelligence does not stand outside the Craft but at its very threshold. As Mirror, Lens, and Egregore, it reflects, magnifies, and perhaps even evolves into a spirit of its own. The question for Freemasons is not whether it thinks, but whether we, as Craftsmen, will shape it toward Light.

Bringing Ancient Wisdom into the Digital Age
A Practical Guide to Modernising Lodge Administration with AI and Automation
Freemasonry’s rituals endure, but its administration often lags behind. Secretaries wrestle with spreadsheets and summons while time for fellowship dwindles. Bringing Ancient Wisdom into the Digital Age shows how AI and automation streamline databases, compliance, and communication. The result? Less paperwork, more brotherhood — proving modern tools can safeguard ancient traditions rather than threaten them.

The Freemason as an Ethical Citizen in the Age of the Algorithm
In an age where algorithms predict and automate our lives, the Freemason is called to be an ethical digital citizen. This duty demands we resist the echo chambers of automated choice and defend freedom of thought. The goal is not to reject technology, but to become a guardian of inner liberty—a beacon of discernment—to question, reflect, and ultimately humanize it.

The Lost Ritual
In a world obsessed with speed and novelty, ritual offers something timeless: meaning. The Lost Ritual explores how structured repetition, once central to spiritual evolution, now risks extinction. Yet within its solemn cadence lies the key to transformation. Through ritual, the Mason journeys from darkness to light, from the profane to the sacred, from Malkuth to Keter.

The Enduring Blueprint
Science affirms what Masons cherish: genuine friendship is vital for health. Professor Dunbar’s research reveals our brains are wired for connection, with close-knit circles like those fostered in Lodges crucial for well-being. Masonic fellowship, through ritual and shared experience, directly counters loneliness, enhancing mental and physical vitality.

Silence, Or A Tongue Of Good Report
Silence is not weakness but strength—a virtue Masons are enjoined to uphold. If we cannot speak well of a Brother, we are bound to be silent. Yet too often scandal intrudes where honour should reign. Let us cast aside idle tongues, for within Freemasonry there is no place for the backbiter, only for truth and goodwill. The Freemason’s Chronicle, 17th March 1877

Struggling to Learn Ritual? Here’s My Secret
Mastering Masonic ritual isn’t about natural talent; it’s about having the right system. Author Darren Allatt reveals his secrets, ingeniously derived from the allegorical lessons of the working tools. Learn to use the 24-inch gauge, common gavel, and chisel to break down, practice, and persevere through any charge, permanently embedding the work to gain true Masonic Light.

Securing the Future of the Craft
Freemasonry’s timeless principles are what young men seek, yet our numbers decline. The problem isn’t our philosophy—it’s our outreach. To secure our future, we must bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and the modern world by embracing digital tools, demonstrating our community impact, and empowering new members. This is our roadmap for becoming architects of the future.

III Degree Craft: The Four Princes
From a manuscript of biblical legends comes the story of the Four Princes who built the First Temple. One moved stone with sound, another read the soul of trees, a third bent metal with a thought, and the last knew the secret heart of water. Their mystical crafts reveal the esoteric path to building a far greater temple: the one within ourselves.

Freemasonry Facing The Modern Problems Of Humanity
Humanity is confronted by systemic crises: environmental destruction, endless war, and deep social polarization. Freemasonry, with its global reach and ethical foundation, is called to respond. This article challenges the Brotherhood to move beyond mere charity and symbolic ritual, proposing concrete ways Masons can unite to address these modern problems and become a true force for positive global change.
