Echoes of the Temple
By: Kevin Woolgar
There are moments when a man realises he is not merely living through his own trial but standing in the long shadow of history.
For me, that shadow stretches back to a dawn on Friday, 13 October 1307, when the banners of the Knights Templar were torn down by the very powers they had served.
Their guilt was declared before a hearing, their wealth seized before a verdict, and their loyalty re-written as treachery.
All was done, so the chronicles tell us, for the peace of the Church – yet peace built on silence is only the stillness after ruin.
Seven centuries later, the banners have changed colour, yet the pattern endures.
Today we call it process: freezing orders, injunctions, disclosure, bankruptcy.
We bow not to kings or popes, but to paperwork and procedure.
Still, the script is familiar.
First the accusation, then the confiscation; first the judgment in rumour, then the verdict in law.
To stand inside that cycle is to feel time collapse – to know what it is to be tried by presumption and buried beneath appearances of fairness.
I have felt that weight: the slow erosion of name, the public recital of accusation, the quiet assumption that a man’s defence is but a delaying tactic.
It is a peculiar loneliness – not simply to be disbelieved, but to be processed.
Everything becomes mechanical: affidavits, bundles, undertakings.
Somewhere behind the glass, the human story fades.
Yet I am not without faith.
Freemasonry teaches that light is born of darkness, that integrity is not granted by institutions but forged within the individual.
The Templars knew that lesson; they stood by their truth when confession would have bought them life.
Their courage did not save them, but it saved their honour – and honour, in the end, outlives verdicts.
If history repeats itself, let it do so with awareness.
Let every generation recognise how easily law becomes a mirror for power, and how vital it is to speak when the system’s silence becomes deafening.
For when justice forgets mercy, and process forgets purpose, the temple once again burns from within.
The Oath of Light
So I take my lesson from both history and hardship.
The Templars met the flames with composure; their Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, called upon Heaven to judge between the innocent and the accuser.
He did not curse; he simply bore witness.
That, in the end, is all a man of conscience can do – to stand, unbent, in the place where truth and trial meet.
I have walked that same narrow ground, not amid swords and chains, but within a courtroom’s quiet machinery – its papers, seals, and orders.
The weapons are subtler now, yet the test is the same: will a man yield to injustice for comfort, or will he endure for the sake of what he knows to be right? So I choose endurance.
I affirm the same ancient vow that built the Temple and every lodge since: to uphold integrity over advantage, to defend truth even when it costs dearly, and to believe that light, though delayed, is never extinguished.
Let those who wield power remember: authority is transient; conscience is eternal.
Let those who suffer remember: we are not alone in the pattern – we walk in a line of men and women who would rather face ruin than falsehood.
When history turns its wheel again, as it surely will, may it find us standing – not as victims of its repetition, but as keepers of its lesson.
